Archie Comics

Unlike most of the other comments on this article, I am not commenting on the new character in the Archie comic. What I am wondering is why this article is on CNN. Now, I’m used to really, really bad and obnoxious opinion pieces from CNN. They’re par for the course for the website. But how is an update about a comic book actual news?

I remember when Archie chose Betty over Veronica and it somehow made all major news centers. Are Archie comics really still so popular? Does any plot line in any medium really warrant coverage by CNN? Really?

The Oscars 2010

I admit, I’m a huge award ceremonies fan girl and I haven’t missed a single year of the Oscars since I was 8. One year I managed to watch from Hawaii and another year where I watched from four blocks away the night before my college interview.

Surprise NPH is a lovely surprise and why can’t he host the entire show? I don’t like Baldwin’s and Martin’s jokes and from the looks of the people they’re making fun of, it’s a popular opinion. I would much prefer NPH to be hosting.

Supporting Actor goes to IB, there’s a surprise. If I was drinking, my game would include “half a glass every time IB wins” so that I don’t bite through my lips.

I really don’t like the little platform they have, it’s very awkward for the people in the front and it shows.

Cameron Diaz’s dress is a teeny bit too tight and judging by a few other signs she very recently gained just enough weight to make you wish she had her dressed loosened. She’s still gorgeous and it’s a lovely dress but I wish she wore a different dress.

Miley Cyrus has a very bad tan and a very bad dress and looks like she’s 30 instead of her 17 year old self. Amanda S. on the other hand comes of as adorable and classy. And it’s funny to see how they both wore puffy skirts and somehow only one managed to pull it off. (Three guess which one, and the first two of don’t count.)

I love Robert Downey Jr.’s outfit. And heart the Tina Fey and Robert Downy Jr.’s entire presentation. Can we keep them as hosts? IB didn’t win! I’m not so much rooting for someone as rooting against IB. Though the Hurt Locker was kind of obvious.

I somehow called that it was going to be about John Hughes when the two stars of his movies came out on stage. And wow Matthew Broderick has aged. And is kind of short. It’s extremely odd to see some of the actors when they were young. And it’s really touching that they got them back on stage to talk about him and his movies.

I love the speech given by the guy who received the award for the Logorama movie. It was just adorable. And uh, who’s the red haired woman who ran out to talk and interrupt the guy accepting the Oscar for the Documentary. I love how everyone is carefully stepping around the puffy purple dress (I feel like I had a sponge like that once.)

I realize that Star Trek won for more than just Spock’s ears, but from the clip? Well, Spock’s ears were almost their own character. And how often do you get to say “I didn’t want to step on your tail?” and it was a lovely speech and thankfully Stiles stepped out of the shot.

I really wish Sherlock Holmes won over Avatar for set decoration. One of the things I loved about SH is the gorgeous, gritty sets. They didn’t try to clean up the Victorian era. But Avatar is the darling this time around, so no Oscar for SH.

Sandra Bullock your dress is gorgeous, you’re amazing, but your lipstick is a bit too bright.

Any other year and Star Trek would have won for special effects. But this is 2010 and Avatar was nominated.

Keanu Reaves, please don’t forget to shave. You’re on stage at the Academy Awards, dressing nicely is not enough. Stop by the bathroom sink and shave.

And at this point, our recording ran out. So much for that.

Chestnut Fail

I’ve been doing very well with cooking and the oven recently, and I’ve been craving chestnuts. I figured it would be easy enough to roast some in the oven.

Which is how I now have a cut finger and woke up my entire building with the fire alarm. Oh, and then I ended up with salt in the cut because I’m special and decided to salt the salmon while waiting for the chestnuts to roast. And one chestnut exploded so I’m going to need to clean my oven at some point. My oven that never turns off so it’ll be warm if not hot.

Never doing that again.

So, how do you say oops in Polish?

(Come on, he isn’t even wearing clothes and is drawn in a completely different style! Seriously?)

No, really? I mean, the man had killed a fairly popular Prime Minister. I can’t imagine why there might be people who feel “vengeful” towards him. And seriously, the man was allowed to marry and have a child. What did he expect when he assassinated a Prime Minister? A parade?

The Only Study of Its Kind

How much do you want to bet that the only thing some people will take away from this article is that abstinence only education works?

Even though what the study (and to a lesser degree – the article) is really saying is that it very, very slightly causes some kids to wait a year or two. So instead of having sex at 12, they’re waiting until 14. That’s…a vast improvement. Really. Now, I usually like to read the study itself rather than just the news article. But even without seeing the actual study, I do have to wonder – would these kids have waited those two or so years anyway even without the study?

Across the Universe

Apparently, people who saw this movie either 1. loved it 2. thought it butchered the Beatles 3. loved the music but could do without plot. I have to agree with three, mostly. The music was fantastic (and I say this as a Beatle’s fan with pretty good musical hearing). The plot … was there. It was more of a way to glue the songs together rather than actually tell a story without plot holes.

The beginning is slow and boring. It took me three tries to get into the movie and it was very, very hard to get past the 40 minute mark. But the songs finally kept me hooked – and chores at my computer – long enough for the movie to get interesting on its own.

At its core, it’s a movie about a boy and a girl. And the girl’s brother, a war, strawberries, and what happens when you drop acid. The movie is helped by the fact that you find yourself somehow rooting for Jude and Lucy and Max, no matter how much you may not want to. There’s very little deep thought in the movie, and quite a bit of living for the day, but it’s not meant to be a deep movie.

Across the Universe is just that – a pretty romp across the universe with gorgeous music, visuals, and cast. The acting helps keep the movie afloat and covers up the lack of plot. But then again, how much plot does a romantic musical really need? Across the Universe already manages more plot than most romantic movies – it even brings in a war and various types of culture!

I also randomly really loved some of the girls’ outfits. I was born in the wrong decade for fashion.

The Rear Window

I didn’t actually mean to watch The Rear Window, mostly because I’m not a big Hitchcock fan, and also because I hated Disturbia. But it was on air, and the person in charge of the remote decided it would be entertaining.

I was rather pleasantly surprised about how much I liked the movie. It wasn’t scary at all – honestly it wasn’t even suspenseful. But I loved how all the different stories played out on what was obviously one set. While the stories were mostly minor and never really crossed over into each other, they still added to the overall plot and the color of the film.

I also loved that Grace Kelly’s character Lisa was the active one in the movie. While Jeff is stuck in his chair, simply watching the world, Lisa can go and interact with events and people. She is the one who goes along with the sarcastic nurse to go dig up what may be a corpse. And then she’s the one to break into what may be a murder’s apartment to look for evidence. While Jeff sits helps across the courtyard, Lisa tries to convince the murderer of her innocence in breaking into his apartment. And in the end, she’s back to reading her fashion magazines.

Oh, and I loved Grace Kelly’s outfits so much. Even at the end, lounging in a blouse and jeans, she still managed to make the clothes look very classy. And there aren’t enough words about how much I loved her white and black dress from the beginning.

Deja Vu All Over Again

Except this time it’s the international family who get to keep the children. The international family located at “the end of the world” and with at least one child requiring severe medical assistance. How does that even make sense?
